It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Lorine Carlson, 100, of Hurley, SD — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.

The story begins in 1926, with the arrival of a life that would be cherished by many.
Lorine held deeply to the Methodist faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.
Faith is the language some lives are written in. Lorine's was one.
Lorine Carlson, 100 of Hurley, passed away on April 1, 2026 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg. Memorial service will be held at 10:30 Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at Hurley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5:30-7:00 Pm Monday, April 6, 2026 at the church. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.Mary Lorine Carlson, born February 19,1926 in Chamberlain South Dakota. The daughter of Fred Kies and Millie (Rundell) Kies. They lived on a farm near Reliance, South Dakota where the family ran a General/Feed store. They also picked up trucking jobs.When she was young, the family settled in Hurley with the family. Working road construction, they commonly traveled the state in summer. One of her many stories was about camping on the runway at the Elsworth Air Base during WW2 while helping build the Air Base.After graduating from Hurley High School, she worked on the railroad throughout the Midwest. She was downtown Chicago on D-Day. She said that it was "quite a party something to see". She was very proud of earning money to buy her own gravel truck, which helped her pay for her degree at SDSC in Brookings.On April 30, 1950, she married Kenneth T. Carlson in the family home. They lived in Columbus, Nebraska where their son Ronald was born in 1951. They moved back to Hurley where their daughter Loris (Lori Meeder) was born in 1952.Lorine, very proud of her independence, lived on her farm west of Hurley until she was 95 years old. In 2020 She moved to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Lennox, when they closed. She moved to the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, South Dakota where She Passed away on April 1, 2026.Lorine is survived by her son Ronald (Marlene) of Hurley. Her daughter Loris (Phillip) Meeder of Winner, South Dakota. six grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Kenneth, Sister Jean Carlson and an Infant brother Donald.
